Deaf President Now Outline
I.
Why?
a. Jerry C.
Lee, the previous president resigned in 1987 and among the candidates up for
consideration were two Deaf men by the names of Dr. I King Jordan and Dr.
Harvey Corson
b. The
seventh appointed president of Gallaudet university was hearing, despite a Deaf
president being considered
c. Jane
Spilman, the chairwoman of the board, allegedly stated that "Deaf people are not able to function in a hearing
world," causing outrage from the Deaf community.
II.
Who was involved?
a. Bridgetta Bourne- Student leader
b. Jerry Covell- Student leader
c. Greg Hlibok- Main student leader, publicist, did
interviews, “talked” to the hearing community
d. Tim Rarus- Student leader
e. Jane Basset Spilman- Chairwoman of the Board
f. Dr. I King Jordan- Candidate for presidency, future
president of Gallaudet
g. Robert Carl Johnson- Professor of Math at Gallaudet U.
III.
Student Demands
a. #1. That the seventh president of Gallaudet university
be hearing impaired.
b. #2. That the chairmen of the board of trustees of
Gallaudet University, Jane Bassett Spilman, resign from the board of trustees
of Gallaudet University.
c.
#3. That the
composition of the board of trustees of Gallaudet University be changed at the
earliest possible time so that a
majority of the board be composed of hearing impaired individuals.
d. #4. That no penalty be imposed upon students, faculty,
staff or administrators (friendly amendment)
IV.
Important Dates
a. August
1987, Jerry C. Lee announces his resignation
b. March
6th 1988, The Board of Trustees appointed Elisabeth Zinser as
president of Gallaudet U.
c. March
7th, the students announce their demands
d. March
9th, Jordan announces his support of Zinser
e. March
10th, Jordan revokes his support and Zinser resigns
f. March
11th, student march to the Capitol
g. March
13th, Spilman resigns, and the other demands are met or taskforces are
set up so they did.
V.
Consequences
a. All
demands were met
b. Deaf
equality was promoted
c. Jordan
increased the endowment fund from $5million to $150 million
